On this day in 2018 I bought this truck. It was so pretty a rainbow shot it out of it while I was signing the documents. 18 months later I sold it because the payments weren't getting me any closer to my financial goals. . I finally have a new laptop so I've been quite busy editing new videos for YouTube and writing logbook posts for our website. The logbook is a mix of stories about our adventures and me pouring my heart out detailing our failures at reaching financial independence. Go give it a read if you like good stories or if you enjoy watching a desperately frugal person fall apart as he makes one step forward and two steps backwards in what seems to be a hopeless journey to becoming financially independent. . #chesapeakebay #seadoogotmethere #newcars #fire #financialfreedom

Pre-COVID, but only barely. We snapped this photo of one of the coolest alleys ever while in Roatán, Honduras last February. At this time, we barely knew what Coronavirus was. A month later, the world was quarantined to their homes. Crazy to think what a different world we lived in four months ago. . Story time: Kari wanted to go lay on a beach and I wanted to check out the beach bar. As I sat at the bar drinking a local brew and watching a group of newbies fall off paddle boards into the turquoise water (we all fall. Don't worry about being new to something and falling in front of people. Only assholes will laugh AT you. It's more fun when people are around to laugh WITH you and help you get back up), I struck up a conversation with a very drunk white guy sitting next to me. . He drank shot after shot of tequila while mumbling his life story to me. After we started talking, his shots cost him double since he insisted on buying me one every time he had one. Each time he took a shot, I think he forgot he just had one because he would immediately order more. I drank the first one, dumped the second one, and told the bartender "no mas para mi." I'm pretty bad at Spanish, so the bartender kept them coming two at a time. The guy would gulp down each shot I ignored as if it was water. . He was mostly incoherent, but after asking him to repeat himself several times, I pieced together that he was from Arizona and came to Roátan for a couple of weeks ten years ago. He had a local wife, owned two businesses on the island, plus FIFTY restaurants in the US. Yes, 50! . His visa was expiring so he was being forced to go back to the states where the Revenue man would be waiting for him with handcuffs as he stepped off the plane. After a ten year hiatus in Paradise, he was facing jail time in the States for not paying taxes on any of those fifty restaurants he owned back home. . Oops. . The moral of the story is, if you go to Roátan for two weeks, sell all your assets in the States because you're probably going to stay down there for a while. . . . #neverstopexploringtraveling #roatanhonduras #lifeisanadventure

There's a good story behind this weird Instagram post. Kari is out on her longest ever solo run on the Sea Doo! She left from West River, where you see my face, and is riding to Deale, at the bottom left of the map. . Notice her speed. After many years of riding skis on the Chesapeake Bay, we've found that about 20 to 25 mph is the sweet spot for cruising on a jet ski. The water is just too rough to go any faster out there. This is why we don't bother wasting our money on the faster, supercharged models. We've ridden in groups with those faster skis and we all got there at the same time. We happened to have arrived on about half as much fuel, in many cases. . If you are considering a PWC for exploring the Chesapeake Bay, save your money and get the more economical model. If you live on a lake, get the 70 mph version and shred some gnar! . We ride a 2018 Sea Doo GTX 155. Previously, we owned a 2015 Sea Doo GTI 130. They both go 55 mph top speed, but the 130 was slightly better on fuel. The huge difference between these skis is the hull. The GTX hull is MUCH more comfortable in rough water. There is a very noticeable night and day difference between those two skis in rough water. From our experience, the Sea Doo GTX I'd the perfect ski for the Chesapeake Bay. . For 2020, they increased the hp to 170 over our 155. We are excited to get that one with more hp, but still no supercharger. In addition to a higher upfront cost and more gas usage, the supercharged models have to be winterized. We've never winterized our skis, and in fact, we ride in the ice and snow! Check out our YouTube videos for proof! . #chesapeakebay #seadoogotmethere
On this Memorial Day, we are thinking about all the suffering and loss the world has experienced this year. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this pandemic. I’m also remembering my friend, Army Staff Sgt. Brandon Farley, Afghanistan 2008. If you are able, please consider donating to COVID response and veteran support groups. Be good. Hug someone in your household and tell them you love them.

Google reminded me today that on this day 3 years ago we were deciding whether to sell or repair our 1976 27' Hunter named Rhumb Line. The hatches all leaked, in addition to an unknown source of rain water intrusion that was most likely the deck-to-hull joint. Despite our best efforts to keep her dry, the interior wood all needed to be replaced. Ultimately we decided it was more of a project than what we were willing to take on. We slapped a sign on her that said, "It's been fun, but it's time to let her go. $100 OBO." These photos show some of the customizations I did to make her faster. Stickers! Some from a road trip I took out West in 2013. Others from my past life as a whitewater and sea kayaker. More from friends' endeavors into entrepreneurship. One is my name tag from orientation day from way back in 2010 when I started working at REI. So many memories in that old boat, but we were quickly growing out of her. Feels like it's been so much longer than three years. . If we can ever kick the 'ronas ass, we will get another boat this year. Hopefully. We decided to dump a bunch of money into our house, so hopefully we have room in our bank account for a boat. . . . #chesapeakebay #neverstopexploringtraveling #mdlivin #mdinfocus #chesapeakebayboating #betteronthebay #chesapeakesailing #chesapeakelife #goplayoutside

Day 9. A little windblown, but still had fun taking advantage of the 77° weather on Friday after a full week of being stuck in the house. Due to the wind blowing cold water all over me I wasn't able to go far, so I explored the shallow waters of West River and its tributaries at idle speeds. I think the ski was happy to be in the water. . ANNOUNCEMENT! . I'm in the process of writing a blog post about making do with what you have. I've been looking back at my life and realizing opportunities I've missed because I was waiting until I had something "better" for the job rather than utilizing what I already have. I'm saying this because I've put off some adventures around the Chesapeake Bay because I don't have a boat with overnight accommodations. Although I can't anchor out overnight on the Sea Doo, I can tie up in marinas and stay in hotels. This year, I am encouraging more people to get out on the Bay. I'm going to show the world that you don't need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a boat to enjoy weekend long, or even week long, trips around the Chesapeake Bay. Over the course of the 2020 boating season, we are going to complete two HUGE trips to prove you can explore the Chesapeake Bay in its entirety from the discomfort of something as small and affordable as a PWC. If it can be done on a PWC, it can be done on almost anything! . Trip 1. We will complete the new Great Chesapeake Bay Loop by PWC. Check out @visitmaryland for more info on the loop! . Trip 2. Cap to Cap by PWC. We will ride the Sea Doo from the Maryland state capitol to the Virginia state capitol; Annapolis to Richmond. . See our blog posts in the Logbook for more information on these adventures. A few weeks ago we took a cruise to celebrate @allicio_boat birthday . Loads of adventures happened! Along the way, we surprised Kari's dad with a vow renewal, in which yours truly officiated. "You drink, I drink, we drink. By the power vested in me by this beach in Mexico, I re-pronounce you husband and wife. Let's party." Then we rode a boat up a river in Belize to explore Mayan ruins. After that Kari and I explored Roatan, Honduras for a day. I'm pretty sure we are going to run away to Roatan some day soon. If this account goes silent, you know where to find us. Ever been encouraged to jump off the roof of a dock bar by the owner? Love you, Roatan! . Two weeks later our ship was quarantined for a Coronavirus scare. A brawl broke out and people were pepper sprayed. Looks like we missed the real fun. . BTW, I'm counting this as 8 days on the water for 2020. 😎 . . . . #cruise #cruiseship #roatanhonduras #belize #unbelievable #greenflash #sunset #sunsetcruise #caribbeansunset #mscmeraviglia #oceanlife #waterman #sailinglife #spinsheet100

If you need motivation to pledge, go check out the good work @oysterrecovery is doing to plant oysters in the bay. 8.5 BILLION oysters planted to date! . Healthy oyster reefs are vital to the restoration of the #ChesapeakeBay. A single oyster can clean 50 gallons of Bay water a day. Not to mention their economic impact for the region. . It's incredibly easy to be a part of the solution. ORP is able to plant 100 oysters for only $1! I wonder how many scenes like this I would have missed had I not taken on the #spinsheet100 challenge? It's surreal to think I only have about three days left before I've finally completed it. Every day on the water is enjoyable but, I would be lying if I refused to admit this has been a particularly difficult challenge. 100 days = two times a week, every week, all year. That includes all the crappy months when most boats aren't even in the water. My crazy self has decided to add five more days in December! . My list of reasons to fail is long. We don't have a boat this year for making longer, overnight trips that log days faster than day trips on the ski or SUP. Plus, photos and videos from our boat travels make better stories, although we've had some doozies on the ski this year! Additionally, I've been traveling a lot for work, especially in the warmer months. When I get home from work in the evening, just like everyone else, I'm tired and don't feel like doing anything. Like most people, I leave for work before the sun comes up and get home after dark. . When we picked our house, we chose one close to the water. So, boat or no boat, I have toys and easy access to the water. Tired, traveling, no boat, it's cold/hot/raining/windy, this is hard, are all excuses designed by my weak minded angel on my left shoulder to give me a way out. My adventurous angel on my right shoulder is sitting there the whole time chanting, "Dooo it, dooo it, dooo it!" . My dad always says, "Excuses are like buttholes. We all have one and they all stink." I have no excuses for my excuses. This is what I love to do. Although my default state is lazy, I yearn to explore, even if only the waters of my own backyard. I have to push myself out the door to do it. In the end, I'm always so thankful for the adventurous angel. . Push yourself to do something outside "easy mode" this weekend. I know you're tired from a long week at work. I'm sorry to tell you, next week isn't going to be any better. You are working this weekend? Go for a walk around the neighborhood when you get home. Grab a flashlight, look both ways before crossing the road, and explore your neighborhood!
On this day in 2018 I bought this truck. It was so pretty a rainbow shot it out of it while I was signing the documents. 18 months later I sold it because the payments weren't getting me any closer to my financial goals.
